Title: Sexual Offender Assesment: DSM-5 Proposals Modifying Diagnostic Criteria for Paraphilias and Related Disorders
As a member of the American Psychiatric Association’s paraphilias working group, Martin P. Kafka, M.D., Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, will discuss the evolving proposals for DSM-5 diagnostic categories associated with sexual offending. The current criteria and empirical support for Pedohebephilic disorder and Paraphilic Coercive Disorder will be reviewed. Controversies associated with specific behavioral diagnostic criteria (minimum victim numbers), hypersexuality as a dimensional variable and Hypersexual Disorder associated with sexual offending will be presented. Together, these changes are intended to clarify issues associated with sexual offender assessment but, as with any changes in diagnostic criteria, “unintended consequences” are likely as well.
